As part of its 'Ask a Historian' Lecture Series, CMES Tunisia presents a scholarly discussion with Kmar Bendana, Professor of History at the University of Manouba, on Abdelaziz Thaalbi's life, work and trial. This discussion will be moderated by Laura Thompson, PhD candidate at Harvard University.  Questions will highlight less-known aspects of Thaalbi's political, intellectual and personal life: What do we know about the founder of the Destour Party (1920), today? How was this national figure peceived in post-Independance Tunisia and why did his image reemerge, to become iconic, in post-Revolution Tunisia? What are the reasons and circumstances behind his exiles and his trial? Why was Thaalbi sentenced to death after being accused of blasphemy in 1904?Thaalbi-Affiche
