As a political anthropologist in both Brazil and Nigeria, he specializes in the ethnographic study of freedom and authority in relation to poverty, sexuality, race, and religion. He is the author of [Minoritarian Liberalism: A Travesti Life in a Brazilian Favela](https://press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/book/chicago/M/bo135981232.html). Lino e Silva has been selected as a World Social Science fellow by the International Social Science Council (UNESCO).
