As a political anthropologist in both Brazil and Nigeria, he specializes in the ethnographic study of freedom and authority in relation to poverty, sexuality, race, and religion. He is the author of </span><a href="https://press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/book/chicago/M/bo135981232.html"><span>Minoritarian Liberalism: A Travesti Life in a Brazilian Favela</span></a><span>.
